HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE - HEROES JOURNEY
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is a
movie based on J. K. Rowling’s 1997 novel of the same name and directed by
Chris Columbus. The story is about Harry Potter, an 11-year-old orphan who is
raised by his aunt and uncle. He learns that he’s a wizard who has survived his
parents’ murder by the dark wizard Lord Voldemort when he was an infant, when
he is accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The Ordinary World for Harry is living with the
Dursleys, his aunt and uncle. We can see that he is treated like an outcast. As
Uncle Vernon says, “Strange things happen whenever he’s around”. Harry lives
under a cupboard, eats less than the rest of his family and we can feel that
from the moment Dumbledore and McGonagall left him on the Dursleys’ doorstep,
Harry doesn’t belong to this world.
Harry’s Call to Adventure is when owls send Hogwarts
invitations to the Dursleys’ home. His aunt and uncle want by no mean for him
to go to that school, so they try to prevent Harry from reading the letters.
As for the Refusal of the Call, we see that Harry
doesn’t refuse studying at Hogwarts. So, the actual refusal is, as stated
before, the Dursley’s who don’t want him to go to the School. This resulted in
the owls flooding the whole house with Hogwarts invitations.
Harry has a couple of Supernatural Aids, the first
one being Hagrid. Hagrid is a giant who shows up to take Harry to Hogwarts. He
is a good mentor for the young wizard. He may not know everything, but his
goofiness makes him easily approachable.
The young wizard then meets Dumbledore, who is Hogwarts’
Principal. Dumbledore isn’t always there but he is a good aid for Harry.
Crossing the first Threshold. Harry
goes to Diagon Alley with Hagrid to buy the materials he needs for school. The
Diagon Alley is a good way for him to get used to his new life and get on his
feet in this new environment.
The Road of the Trials for
Harry isn’t an easy one. He has to face a troll in the bathroom, a three-headed
dog in the basement and a magic mirror that can swallow souls. The Quidditch
match can also be considered a trial, even if it’s not a life-and-death test.
Potter doesn’t exactly Meet with the Goddess. The
Goddess in his case are the friends he makes, Ron and Hermione, who are there
with him in his hardships.
The Apotheosis comes when Harry comes face to face
with the person who killed his parents, Lord Voldemort. After a series of
trials once he and his friends entered the basement (vines, wizard’s chess
game, flying keys), the young wizard ends up alone and facing his most deadly
enemy.
After killing Voldemort, Harry’s Reward is the
Philosopher’s Stone which could have brought Voldemort completely back to life
if he won.
We don’t get to see an actual Rescue from Without, as
Harry is passed out and then gains consciousness at the hospital bed in the
Nurse’s office.
With Voldemort gone, and as the school year has come to an
end, Harry goes back to the Dursleys. He’s finally a Master of Two Worlds,
as he has gained the strength he needed in the Magical World, and he isn’t the
boy he used to be.
Freedom to Live.
Harry has started trusting himself, his new powers giving him the confidence he
needs to live happier.
